Nominated for: BEST Theatre Group
Cleveland Signstage Theatre has a distinguished background of accomplishments beginning in 1975. In that year two talented Cleveland actors, one deaf (Brian Kilpatrick) and one hearing (Charles St. Clair), formed a group with a unique mission. They founded Fairmount Theatre of the Deaf to present plays that both hearing and deaf audiences could understand and enjoy. Their objective was to entertain and educate both hearing and deaf adults and children and thereby achieve cultural integration.
In its 29-year history, the Theatre has performed 93 highly professional Mainstage plays winning many awards. Besides the "too numerous to mention" favorable newspaper reviews, these awards include the Ohio Governor's Award for Educational Outreach and four local Emmy's for appearances on PBS. It has participated in international Arts festivals in Russia, the Czech Republic, Jordan and at Gallaudet University in Washington DC.
Sign Stage on Tour took over where SignStage theatre left off. It travels to all four corners of the United States touring children's theatre plays.
